Exports from the North

It’s that time of year again. As we get ready for bonfire night over the weekend, we had a moments panic when we realised that we hadn’t imported our must haves; Black Peas and Parkin. With only 2 days to go and Black peas need soaking overnight, we had to get some in the post today. Thankfully… father to the rescue and our supply should be with us with a day to spare!

Life would be so much easier if I could go to any shop and actually buy things from up north! You’d think Asda would have them!

Ask for “Black Peas” and you get the response; “Black Eye Peas?”… ask for Parkin and you’re asked; “Long or Short Stay?”

You’ll notice no direct wiki link either for those terms – like that’s going to work! You’ll notice no pictures either! What is the world coming too?

Ask or “Black Peas” and you get the pesponse

‘Pesponse’ is that a word only used when talking about peas. Missed out an ‘f’ too.
I am sad pulling you up on typos.

I have just been to the ‘what do you miss’ link and spent the last 10 mins giggling and missing ‘home’ like I have never before. So many childhood memories came flooding back. By eck, I might pretend to be a soft southern jess but deep down I’m a Lancashire lass at heart :)

Haven’t you got work to do? :)

  4. Lindsay Says:

I’ll be having treacle toffee tonight . . . what about you lot?

  5. Chris Wild Says:

Yes, we got some treacle toffee… and hopefully the post man will turn up with our peas and parkin tomorrow… a little short for soaking the peas, but what can you do when you live in the outback! :)

  6. Sparrowhawk Says:

errr… we have black peas here in Bath. Or are they special Northern Black Peas ™?

  7. Chris Wild Says:

No, they are not special… bath must be a honoury northern town! :) No seriously I am suprised, maybe there was a flood of northern imigrants just after the masons rebuilt it! :)

  8. David Skulkrin Bait West Says:

Parkin is from Yorkshire lad, why the reference to Lancashire, our old enemy? Black peas may well be from Lancashire however as I’ve never heard of them and now that I have I wish I hadn’t – sounds foul, as in something Doomdark would force-feed his armies on.

  9. Chris Wild Says:

I didn’t reference Parkin as being from Lancashire… just commenting on Northern food. However, I am a Geordie who spent most of his childhood in Lancashire – and my father’s side of the family are from there. You really should try black peas!

  10. David Skulkrin Bait West Says:

My error, I wasn’t used to your blog and though that the links were referring to Parkin being from Lancs, sorry!

What are black peas then, are they really peas which are black or something else?

  11. Chris Wild Says:

Yes, there are peas that are black! :)

You prepare them much like you would normal dried peas, or lentils, or mushy peas… soak overnight and then cook until they are the required consistency… splash with salt and vinegar and consume.

A quick google will give you more info.
