New Albums

Latest few albums that I have bought… not quite sure what the rationale behind purchasing them was. I just decided to buy some albums and these were the ones I ordered…

Jack Johnson – On and On What can you say. Just fantastic Jack Johnson all the way. Turn out the lights, light some candles, get a glass of wine, and put some Jack on the stereo… and relax!

Pink – I’m Not Dead I loved this! This is my first real exposure to Pink, and I loved the album. it’s pretty much complete in every way. Some great tracks, the singles obviously, but also tracks like; ‘Dear Mr President’, ‘I’m not Dead’ and ‘Fingers’. The only downside on it is the track on the end which was written by her father, and they both recorded together. The track ‘I have seen the rain’, is great; it’s an acoustic Vietnam Vet song, and they perform it beautifully. th eonly problem is that there is 30 seconds of pink talking about the recording of the song, at the beginning of it. I wish she had added the dialogue as a track so that I could skip it!

Christina Aguilera – Back To Basics I liked this album a lot. I don’t think I like it quite as much as ‘Stripped’, but then it always hard to follow a fantastic album. It is on the whole, a very rounded 2cds of great songs

Prince – 3121 I like the album, in a “it’s Prince” kind of way. There is nothing fantastic about it. It has a few good moments toward the end, like ‘Fury’, but on the whole, it’s, well, Prince… I felt this with his last album, he just seems to be stagnating or going backwards. You here the same themes, the same instruments, the same riffs. It’s like he’s been so prolific that he’s actually done everything that Prince can do. What he really needs to do is to work with some fresh talent and let go of some of his control. So Prince, if you are reading, and I know you often drop in, go and do some work with the Scissor Sisters and let them rub off on you!

Roger Waters – Ca Ira

Sounds Like “*”

An interesting phenomena. I heard 2 songs back to back on the radio in the car this morning. – In the Morning, and – Iris . What struck me about these records is a) I liked them both, and b) they both sounded like other songs.

In the Morning sounded like a track, and Iris sounded like John Wesley.

Have a nice day…

Bon Jovi - Have a nice dayWent to the City of Manchester Stadium on Sunday night to watch in concert with my friend Lindsay. I’ve seen them three times before, but that was in my “youth”.
They were supported by but to be honest, I didn’t care too much for them, many of there songs seem to keep the same formula to me.
Well, Bon Jovi were fab… they were on stage for 2 hrs 45 minutes and it was a brilliant set list. Covered most of the old regulars and many newer tracks too. When I say newer I mean off the albums Crush, Bounce, and Have a Nice Day – as these are albums that I don’t seem to have gotten round to buying. The show was upbeat and lively and fantastically entertaining.

Listening to 60,000 fans singing “Livin’ on Prayer” was something else and from where we were stood we could see the light of thousands of phone screens as people tried to take pictures or record a movie… it’s kind of a reverse lighter moment that the band would normally see.

Jon still has it… his voice was fantastic live… there were a few alterations in songs due to not being able to hit the high notes; most notably on Runaway. But I think you can forgive him that! 🙂

It was fantastic to hear Dry County played live, and very odd to hear them singing Rockin’ All Ocver the World and Shout – but actually pretty darned great! I was very suprised that they didn’t play anything off These Days, having said that I do think of it as a more serious album.

I was also suprised at the diversity of fans. I just figured we were now in the territory of 30+ year olds like me, but there seemed to be a lot of new young blood.

The organisation was fantastic too. From the moment the concert ended it took about 15 minutes to get out of the stadium, into the car, out of the car park, and on down the road. It’s taken many hours to do the same at other concerts I’ve been too. The police seemed to really have control of the roads.

Well I was a little tired, my Vocal Chords took a bashing, my feet were sore from all that jumping up and down, and I’m sure I smoked about 40 fags because of the couple in front of us… but I had a great time.

Brit Awards – the Albums

Well as was last night, now seems a good oppotunity to look at some of those new albums I got for Christmas and my Birthday.

British Album

  • Coldplay X & Y
  • Gorillaz Demon Days
  • James Blunt Back To Bedlam
  • Kaiser Chiefs Employment
  • Kate Bush Aerial

, , and were on my list of new albums.

I would have chosen between Kate Bush and Coldplay, so the fact that Coldplay won is not a problem.

Coldplay - X & YColdplay – X&Y, I didn’t think I was going to like X&Y, because I didn’t like the Single ‘Fix you’. Victoria was going to buy the album for me, so I thought; what the heck, and bought it. I really really like it! It’s worthy of all the praise handed to it.

Kate Bush - AerialKate Bush –  Aerial, is also fantastic. Typical oddness beautifully done. I read the lyrics before listening, and thought it was going to be crap. How can you have a song about ‘PI’ where the number is recited throughout it? Or singing about washing machines ‘Mrs Bartolozzi’? But the album is Kate Bush at her best, just wonderfully done. There are two discs for the album. The first seems a more random arrangement of songs, whereas the second seems to be put together with some relationship. That said ‘A Coral Room’ on CD1 is just gorgeous.

Kaiser Chiefs - EmploymentKaiser Chiefs – Employment, on the other hand is pants. It does have some great songs on it, ie: all the ones that have been released as singles so far. ‘Everyday I Love You Less and Less’, ‘I Predict  A Riot’, ‘Oh My God’, and ‘Na Na Na Na Naa’… but that’s it, all the rest are dull dull dull…

BRITISH FEMALE SOLO

  • Charlotte Church
  • Kate Bush
  • Katie Melua
  • KT Tunstall
  • Natasha Bedingfield
  • KT Tunstall - Eye to the Telescope took this one, which from the nominees I won’t argue with.

KT Tunstall – Eye to the Telescope. Love this. Fantastic album. Not a bad track on it. She at times reminds me of other artists, but hell there is no crime in that. Well put together album.

Jack Johnson - In Between Dreams took International break Through Artist.

Jack Johnson –  In Between Dreams, loved this as well. Again, not a bad track on it. Reminds me a little of , but that is no bad thing.

Madonna - Confessions on a dance floor picked up International Femal Solo Artist.

Madonna – Confessions on a Dance Floor, I thought I was going to hate this one. When it was first released I listened to some of the tracks on MSN Music and didn’t take to it at all. So I was going to give it a miss, but Victoria gave it to me. I love it! There is only one dodgy track on it; ‘Push’, which I think is terrible and therefore so out of place.
